The Best Airlines to Fly From Boston Logan International Airport (FAA:BOS)

Boston is one of the most historic and fun cities in the United States!

Boston Logan International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States (and one of my personal favorites), and it offers a wide variety of airlines to choose from. While this choice is great for getting to a large variety of destinations, it can also make it difficult to know which airline is the best option for you. To help answer that question, we’ve pulled from the data and our own personal experience to come up with a list of the airlines that give the best balance of price, amenities, destinations, and quality of experience.

Of course, the key to choosing an airline to fly from Boston-Logan will always depend on your destination—certain airlines will always have more direct flights to certain destinations than others. For example, JetBlue has a lot of direct flights to the Caribbean, Delta has more direct flights to Europe, and United has the most flights out west. However, if you don’t have a destination and you’re not sure where you want to travel, make sure to explore our guide for the best destinations to fly from Boston for cheap!

Now that we’ve got the background information out of the way, here are a few of the best airlines to fly from Boston:

1. JetBlue

Our overall best airline to fly from Boston is JetBlue. If you’re unfamiliar, JetBlue is a relatively low-cost carrier that offers a wide variety of direct flights within North America, the Caribbean, and other popular destinations. JetBlue is known for its spacious seat maps, great customer experience, and good price-to-amenities ratio. Jetblue is also particularly well known for its first-class/business customer experience and has ranked first out of all airlines for two years running in the North America Airline Satisfaction Study. As well, while your mileage will vary depending on the specific situation, JetBlue typically has one of the more flexible cancellation policies, allowing you to normally alter your travel plan without penalty if your plans change. Overall, whether you’re interested in flying as cheaply or as lavishly as possible, there is a good travel option for you on JetBlue.

Additionally, if you’re interested in using points to book your flights, Jetblue has one of the best cent-per-miles for flight redemptions of any of the major airlines! Yet it gets better, as even if you don’t have JetBlue miles, you can still travel using points, as JetBlue allows you to transfer from both the Chase and AmEx credit card point systems! There are only a select few airlines with this setup, as being able to combine points from two completely different point ecosystems which normally never overlap is extremely powerful!

JetBlue is clearly a great airline overall with a variety of booking options, but it is also a particularly good airline to fly from Boston. Not only does JetBlue have a large hub at Logan Airport (taking up most of terminal C), allowing it to offer many flights both to and from Boston, but it also covers more destinations than almost any other Boston-based airline!

As far as specific locations, Jetblue is often the best option for flying from Boston to a lot of the East Coast, Florida, and the Caribbean. See below for the full range of destinations you can get to from Boston on JetBlue.

2. Delta Air Lines

Our second finalist for the best airline to fly from Boston is Delta. As Boston Logan is now officially a Delta hub, there is an incredibly WIDE variety of flights to both domestic and international destinations from Boston (see flight map below). Honestly, Delta practically has its own terminal at Boston Logan (Terminal A), with great perks for any Delta status holders or frequent fliers (including a lounge in the Delta terminal that I can personally recommend)! If you are flying to another Delta hub (e.g., Atlanta) there are dozens of flights per day and they are generally very cheap, meaning that Delta is especially useful for travel to hubs like Atlanta, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and LaGuardia.

One of the biggest benefits of flying Delta is that it is a member of the SkyTeam alliance; by being part of the alliance, you can earn and redeem miles on other SkyTeam airlines (such as Air France, KLM, and Virgin) by booking through Delta (and vice versa)! Not only does this increase your total number of flight options, but it also increases the value of Delta’s SkyMiles. While SkyMiles aren’t known as the most valuable airline points out there, Delta is a direct transfer partner of American Express. This makes it easy to accumulate Delta points by transferring from any AmEx card account!

From my personal experience, Delta also has a particularly flexible cancellation policy—I recently had to alter a flight to accommodate a family member’s surgery, and the service agent I spoke with seemed genuinely committed to helping me. Granted, customer service does depend on the specific reps you talk to, but I’ve yet to have a bad experience.

If you don’t have a destination in mind yet and want to fly Delta, I have had good experiences getting cheap deals on flying on Delta to London, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, and Atlanta. However, Delta covers more destinations than any other Boston airline, so you’re sure to be able to find a route that works for you no matter where you’re headed. Make sure you know how to transfer your AmEx points to Delta so you aren’t left feeling stuck when you’re ready to book.

3. United

If you are looking for a major airline with a few specific destinations, United Airlines is another great choice.

As you can see from the flight map below, United offers way fewer destinations than either JetBlue or Delta from Boston. However, the United flights from Boston go to major destinations and are extremely nice from an amenities standpoint, which I feel comfortable being able to say after personally flying four of them.

United is one of the best airlines for flying to the West Coast, with direct flights between Boston and LA, Denver, San Fransisco, and Austin often at shockingly good prices. United Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means you can earn and use miles on other international flights with airlines like Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.

United's point redemption program is quite useful, with 1:1 transfers directly from Chase Ultimate Rewards points—no other airline allows you to use Chase points as effectively as United. If you frequently travel between the East and West Coast, or to the UK via London, we highly recommend checking out the prices of the United flights to these destinations. Keep in mind that flying with United to destinations outside of these key areas may involve layovers (which aren’t the end of the world, but increase the risk of something going wrong).

4. American Airlines

American Airlines (AA) is a very popular choice for flying from Boston and is the fourth airline on our list.

American Airlines is a member of the Oneworld alliance, allowing you to earn and redeem miles on other Oneworld airlines, such as British Airways and Cathay Pacific. In fact, it can often be helpful to book American flights with British for good value point redemptions (or vice versa)!

For domestic flights, AA specializes in quick trips along the East Coast and Midwest—this is where you will find the best value for booking AA from Boston Logan. AA also has point transfers and booking from a variety of different sources (including OneWorld partners), which can make booking these trips with points substantially easier.

Previously, American and JetBlue had a very strong code-sharing partnership in the Northeast; however, they were recently been forced to end this due to antitrust issues. While we’re not certain how this will affect flight prices, previous examples of this happening have tended to result in prices getting cheaper due to the increase in competition!

5. Spirit Airlines

The final airline on this list is everyone’s favorite cheap airline, Spirit.

While Spirit is clearly a much more budget-focused option compared to all the other airlines on this list, they actually offer a decent selection of domestic locations from Boston. Fascinatingly, Spirit offers more destinations south and west than even Southwest Airlines! While these flights have no frills and come with minimal amenities, and frankly, can often be more stressful than a standard airline, they are often extremely cheap compared to almost every other single airline (with round-trip flights for less than $100—you can’t beat that).

If you’re looking to travel on a budget from Boston, Spirit is a great option.
