Best Credit Cards for Gas Payments 2023 (Personal and Business)

With gas prices seemingly always on the rise, it's more important than ever to find a credit card that can help you save money on your fuel costs. Regardless of if you drive professionally or just want to get the most value for your money (or you live in a traffic-heavy city like LA or Boston), getting a card that gives you a return on gas is often a must-have. There are a number of great options for your gas payments available, so you're sure to find one that fits your total number of cards, needs, budget, and ideal term of rewards (cash-back vs points).

So without further delay, here are a few of the best credit cards for gas payments in May 2023. For each card, we will calculate how much you’ll get back in points/cash-back if you were to spend $5000 on gas in a year.

Best Cards for Gas in 2023:

The Citi Custom Cash

Citi Custom Cash® Card.

  • The Custom Cash card offers up to 5% cash back on your top eligible spend category each month (up to $500 in spending), and with gas stations being one of the eligible categories, you can easily earn 5% cash back on all your gas purchases each month! As well, there's no annual fee for this card, meaning that any cash back you get goes straight into your pocket. While you earn Citi ThankYou Points, these can easily be converted 1:1 into cash-back.

If you spend $5000 on gas with this card, that’s a free $250 back per year!

The Wells Fargo Autograph

Wells Fargo Autograph® Card

  • For those who prefer earning points instead of direct cash back, the Autograph from Wells Fargo offers 3x points on gas purchases, as well as 3x points on a wide variety of categories including dining, travel, transit, and popular streaming services. Wells Fargo Points can be redeemed for travel or gift cards. Similar to the previous card, there is no annual fee and still a nice sign-on bonus of 20,000 points when you spend $1000 in the first 3 months of having the card. For those who want to earn points without an annual fee, this is one of the BEST cards out there!

If you spend $5000 on gas with this card, that’s a free 15,000 points per year (in addition to the 25,000-point sign-on bonus)!

American Express Business Gold

American Express Business Gold Card®

  • For those out there who have a business that involves driving, there is almost no better option than the American Express Business Gold card. To start, this card comes with a hefty $295 annual fee, so it’s important to do the math that this card makes sense for you before applying. However, the Amex Business Gold gives a huge sign-on bonus of 100,000 points when you spend $10,000 in the first 6 months of having the card, and then 4x points on your top 2 business spending categories, with gas being one of the possible categories. AmEx points are super valuable and can be used to get great value from travel, both within the AmEx portal and transferred to travel partners.

If you spend $5000 on gas with this card, that’s a free 20,000 points per year. However, if your business spends a lot on gas every year (say $25,000), you can get back more than 100,000 points every single year!

Citi Costco Anywhere Visa

Citi Costco Anywhere® Visa

  • The Costco Anywhere Visa card gives a flat 4% cash-back for all eligible purchases on gas and electric vehicles charging up to $7,000, plus 3% back on travel and restaurants, and 2% back on Costco purchases. If you live near a Costco or just want a simple cash-back card with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, this may be the perfect card for you! If you spend more than $7,000 a year on gas, you may want to look at one of the cards equipped for higher spending, but the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi gives excellent returns for gas payments under that amount!

If you spend $5000 on gas with this card, that’s a free $200 back per year!

Summary

When choosing a credit card for gas, it's important to consider your spending habits and budget—if you spend a lot on gas, you may want to consider a card that offers a high rewards rate on gas purchases, such as the AmEx Business Gold. However, if you're on a tight budget, or spend less than ~$7000 a year on gas, you may want to choose a card with no annual fee, such as the Costco Anywhere Visa or the Citi Custom Cash.
